Before coming here at SKSN, I used to live in my village at Bhavad with my eight brothers and sisters. Four brothers are elder to me, and three sisters are younger to me. I am physically handicapped. Both my limbs are polio-effected. I was not so by birth. I don't remember anything but my mother tells me that when I was two years old, I suffered from fever. I was given injection after which both my legs became useless. In my village, I used to wake up at 7 or 8 A.M.
I helped my mother in the domestic chores as she is also handicapped. In the village my sisters used to play with me. When other children came to play with me, after sometime they would say "who will play with you? You can't even run with us". As the school was at a distance, I could not even attend it. I used to curse my luck. It was very difficult to pass the time at home.
After some time when my father came to know about Sucheta Kripalani Boarding School for girls, our joy knew no bounds. I was the happiest as I was getting an opportunity to study like other children. In July 2000, I left my village and got admission here at Manaklao. Here I feel very homely. Everything is done on time. I wake up at 5 AM. After getting ready, I study from 6 AM to 8.30 AM. At 8.30, I got ready for school. At 9 o'clock we have prayer and then breakfast. Our school timings are from 9.30 AM to 4.30 PM. In the evening we play games. At 7:30 PM, after prayer, we have our food and then we study till 10 PM. Then we go to sleep.
Everything is done in such a systematic way and in time that we never feel homesick. Now when I go to my village during the vacations, the same girls who avoided playing with me ask me about my hostel life. Earlier, I little cared about my hairstyle and dressed up casually as I had no charm of life. Now I am a good girl. I want to tell the whole world that I am physically handicapped and not mentally. I am grateful to all those who have made me capable to say all this.
